cast in place

Three part mould, cast in place glass bead.

some problems with the collet not casting completely around the stone, for two reasons, both to do with air.

A) because the mould is fairly deep some air was getting trapped at the bottom, unable to get out.

The Solution, kindly suggested by Robert Macpherson of Billy & Charlie is to drill a vent out of the bottom of the mould, under where the stone sits, and partly plug it with straw or wire, to impede metal flow, yet allow airflow.

B) as the beads have threading holes, (I Think) in a number of casts, one end would be covered with metal first, and then the air in the hole heats up, expands and blows out of the other end, causing a pit to form. This can be seen quite clearly in the buttons in the second row from the top of the picture.

Solution, use solid beads.

holed beads do give a lovely Chatoyance (Cats Eye) look, but the hole is a bugger to work with.

Button Backs,

the Mould,

and with a bead in place ready to close the mould and pour.

And the MkII version, after the addition of a straw plugged air vent under the stone.
